2016 Fall Visual Arts Lecture Series

Each term, Bennington offers a program of lectures by visiting arts professionals: artists, curators, historians and critics, selected to showcase the diversity of contemporary art practices.  Designed to enhance classroom activities of various disciplines in the Visual Arts and to stimulate campus dialogue around topical issues of contemporary art, these thematically connected presentations will build on each other, offering students the opportunity to explore ideas from multiple perspectives over the course of the term.

Events are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, lectures are held in Tishman Lecture Hall on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30pm. Please see the schedule below for specific dates.

September 20 – Todd von Ammon ’09 and Cyle Metzger ’08

Todd von Ammon ’09, curator of the Usdan Gallery exhibition, “VBS (Violet Burning Sunset)” is an art dealer and independent curator living in New York. Todd has been the director of team gallery in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood since 2014. His third curated exhibition in the gallery will open in September 2016. He studied literature and printmaking at Bennington and lived in Stokes, The Welling Townhouse, Paris Borden and Franklin (in that order). In addition to his work at team, Todd is a member of the ICI’s Independents and runs VISION INC, a project space in his Lower Manhattan apartment.

Cyle Metzger ’08, whose work is included in “VBS (Violet Burning Sunset)” holds an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, an MA in Art History from the University of California, Riverside, and is currently working towards a PhD in Art History with a minor in Feminist and Gender Studies at Stanford University. Cyle has taught studio art at Towson and George Mason Universities.

September 27: Eve Sussman ’84 and Simon Lee

Eve Sussman is a Brooklyn-based artist and filmmaker who works independently and collectively with her partner Simon Lee and Rufus Corporation, founded in 2003. Along with Rape of the Sabine Women, 2004, and 89 Seconds at Alcázar, 2007 that debuted at the Whitney Biennial, the company has collaborated on other projects including Yuri’s Office, 2009, and whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir, 2011. Rufus Corporation’s works have been exhibited and screened internationally and are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; The Margulies Collection, Miami; Fundación La Caixa, Barcelona; and Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Sussman is a 2010 recipient of the Anonymous was a Woman Award and 2008 Creative Capital grantee.

Simon Lee works in photography, video and installation. His work is said to often be “a powerful metaphor for the random flow of history and a low tech formal tour de force” (Holland Cotter, New York Times). His 2010 film collaboration with Algis Kizys, Where is the Black Beast? (2010) was shown at the Sagamore Collection in Miami, Zebra Poetry Film Festival Berlin, IFC Center in New York, and was an official selection at the 2011 Rotterdam Film Festival. Together with Sussman, he co-founded the “Wallabout Oyster Theater,” a micro-theater space run out of their studios in Brooklyn. Lee has exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art; The Berkshire Museum, MA; Roebling Hall, New York; the Moscow International Film Festival; Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montreal; Poznan Biennale, Poland; The Rotunda Gallery, Brooklyn NY; Tinguely Museum, Basel, Switzerland; Espace Paul Ricard, Paris, France; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

October 11: Mariam Ghani

Mariam Ghani is an artist, writer, filmmaker and teacher. Her research-based practice spans video, installation, photography, performance, and text. Her exhibitions and screenings include the Rotterdam, CPH:DOX and transmediale film festivals, the Sharjah and Liverpool Biennials, dOCUMENTA (13) in Kabul and Kassel, MoMA in New York, the National Gallery in DC, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the CCCB in Barcelona. Recent texts have been published by Creative Time Reports, Foreign Policy, Ibraaz, Triple Canopy, and the Manifesta Journal. Recent curatorial projects include the international symposium ‘Radical Archives’, the traveling film program ‘History of Histories’ and the collaborative exhibition ‘Utopian Pulse’. Ghani has collaborated with artist Chitra Ganesh since 2004 as Index of the Disappeared, an experimental archive of post-9/11 detentions, deportations, renditions and redactions; with choreographer Erin Kelly since 2006 on the video series Performed Places; and with media archive collective Pad.ma since 2012 on the Afghan Films online archive.

Ghani has been awarded the NYFA and Soros Fellowships, grants from Creative Capital, Art Matters, the Graham Foundation, CEC ArtsLink, NYSCA, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Experimental Television Center, and residencies at LMCC, Eyebeam Atelier, Smack Mellon, the Akademie Schloss Solitude, and NYU’s Asian/Pacific/American Institute. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from NYU and an MFA from SVA. Ghani currently teaches in the Social Practice MFA program at Queens College and the Film Studies program at the Graduate Center, and is a Visiting Artist at the Schell Center for International Human Rights at Yale Law School.

October 25: Joshua Mosley

Joshua Mosley is Professor of Fine Arts in the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his M.F.A. and B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Joshua is a recipient of several fellowships including the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize, the Pew Fellowship in the Arts, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. His work has exhibited and screened at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, the 2007 Venice Biennale, the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel, Switzerland, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bruce Museum, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Donald Young Gallery, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, the SITE Santa Fe Eighth International Biennial, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

November 8: Andrew Raftery

Andrew Stein Raftery is a printmaker specializing in narrative scenes of contemporary American life. Trained in painting and printmaking at Boston University and Yale, he has focused on burin engraving for the past 12 years, publishing the portfolios Suit Shopping in 2002 and Open House in 2008. Both projects were exhibited at Mary Ryan Gallery in New York and were collected by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the British Museum. In 2003 Raftery received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and in 2008 he was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was elected to membership in the National Academy in 2009. Art historical research is closely aligned with Raftery’s studio practice. In his position as professor of printmaking at RISD, he often collaborates with the RISD Museum on exhibitions and educational programs, recently as consulting curator for The Brilliant Line: The Journey of the Early Modern Engraver, fall 2009 at the RISD Museum and at the Block Museum at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He is a recipient of RISD’s John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching.

November 15: Bob Nickas

Bob Nickas is a critic and curator based in New York. He has organized more than eighty exhibitions since 1984 and served on the teams responsible for Aperto at the Venice Biennale in 1993 and the 2003 Biennale de Lyon. From 2003-06 he was Curatorial Advisor at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York. The author of numerous essays in catalogues and monographs, he is a regular contributor to Artforum and founding editor of Index magazine. His books include two collections of his writing, Live Free or Die (2000) and Theft is Vision (2007).
